Chapter Eight

Rowan lay in the bed staring up at the ceiling of his bedroom as the sun rose. He watched the light move across the wood, the hours ticking as the shadows that fell across the room. He hadn’t slept a bit, the night yawning forever.

He’d been asleep for nearly nine years from the sound of it.

Now he felt like he had awoken to a nightmare he couldn’t get away from.

And then he’d had to listen to his brother bear and their mate together all through the night, loving one another over and over.

Without him.

Not that he deserved anything from the stag. If he’d done what they said, then he couldn’t expect the deer shifter to accept him as a mate. He’d live the rest of his life on the outside, watching as the two of them loved one another.

Rowan scrubbed both hands over his face, wishing he could go back to two days ago… or two days in his mind. Back to that kiss he’d shared with Magnus. If he hadn’t been so afraid of the feelings he’d had, then none of this would’ve happened. He should’ve pressed against the male, taking the kiss and deepening it.

One kiss would’ve changed his world.

The door to his bedroom opened and Magnus looked in. “We’re going to the mines to capture Carron and his cronies so we can get to the bottom of everything that’s happened. Declan needs all the help he can get. Ready to storm the Bastille?”

“You want me to go?” Rowan asked, knowing Magnus still didn’t trust him completely. That stung. Deeply.

“Don’t you want the chance for a little retribution for what Carron did? I think of anyone, you deserve to be there today.”

“What do Gregor and the others think about me joining?”

Magnus’ face fell. “Gregor is dead. Declan is our alpha.”

Magnus ran a hand over his face. So much had changed in the blink of an eye. “When?”

“Just a few months ago,” Magnus answered. “Traylon and Oberon attacked him during a challenge, ganging up. Declan and Graham took Traylon and Oberon down. One night, three bears lost.”

Traylon and Oberon weren’t much of a loss in Rowan’s mind, even if that sounded callous. But Gregor? The big bear had led the den all of Rowan’s life. “I can’t believe Carron wasn’t involved somehow. He was always the one pushing Traylon from behind the scenes. He likely pushed Traylon to attack Gregor.”

“Getting others to do his dirty work seems to be the coward’s M.O.,” Magnus said, pinning Rowan with a glance.

He let the comment slide, still reeling from the news of what had happened over the last few years. None of it felt real. Yet he knew it had to be. The world wasn’t right under his feet and hadn’t been since he’d awoken in that cave. He felt out of place. Maybe helping find the ones responsible would be a step in getting his head right again.
